How to Detox Your Home: Clean-Ups, Swaps, and Creating a Sanctuary

This is where the magic happens: actually transforming your home into a safe, supportive, nontoxic place to live.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress. Small swaps and mindful upgrades add up to a healthier home and a healthier you.

Start with Air

  • Air purifiers: Choose HEPA + activated carbon filters for mold, VOCs, and particulates.

  • Plants: Snake plants, peace lilies, and pothos can help improve air quality (but don’t rely on them as your only purifier). Make sure to keep the soil clean and not too damp.

  • Ventilation: Open windows daily when weather/air quality allows. Use exhaust fans when cooking or showering. Consider having your HVAC ducts every 3 - 5 years.

Pro tip: Regularly vacuum with a HEPA filter to cut down on dust, pet dander, and toxins trapped in carpets.

Air Purifiers

Clean Up Cleaning Products

  • Swap out bleach- and ammonia-heavy cleaners for safe, plant-based alternatives (or DIY vinegar + baking soda).

  • Switch dryer sheets for wool balls, and choose unscented laundry detergents without synthetic fragrance.

  • Avoid aerosol sprays — they add VOCs and fine particles to the air. Hello, asthma, sneezing, and hormone issues!

Detox Your Kitchen

  • Cookware: Replace Teflon/non-stick pans with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic-coated.

  • Storage: Glass, stainless steel.

  • Cutting boards: wood over plastic, except for raw meats.

  • Food choices: Crowd out inflammatory foods (processed oils, refined sugar, fast food) with whole, nutrient-dense meals that lower your body’s toxic burden.

Safer Furnishings + Bedrooms

  • Furniture: Opt for solid wood or low-VOC certified pieces when upgrading.

  • Mattresses + bedding: Consider organic cotton, wool, or natural latex for a toxin-free sleep sanctuary.

  • Flame retardants: Be cautious with upholstered furniture — newer flame-retardant-free options are now widely available - yay!

Your bedroom is where you spend ~⅓ of your life — start detoxing there first if you feel overwhelmed.

Water + Mold Maintenance

  • Install water filters (even a countertop option makes a difference). A whole house reverse osmosis system which adds back in minerals is the gold standard. However, filtering your drinking water is #1 priority. I like Clearly Filtered brand and am in no way affiliated at this time. Also, filter your shower water as your skin aborbs chlorine while you’re showering.

  • Change HVAC filters every 2–3 months.

  • Check under sinks, basements, and attics regularly for leaks.

Daily Habits for a Low-Toxin Lifestyle

  • Shoes off at the door: Keeps pesticides and heavy metals from being tracked in.

  • Declutter: Dust and toxins accumulate on cluttered surfaces.

  • Mindful purchases: Before buying new items, ask: Do I really need this? We tend to have a lot of stuff in our modern world.
